1 big issue remains in teachers’ strike
Teachers in Newton, Massachusetts have been on strike since January 19, resulting in 10 consecutive days of missed school for students. The strike negotiations, which revolve around pay, have hit a stalemate, with both parties disagreeing on the amount of money to be allocated for teachers’ salaries. The Newton School Committee has proposed a pay increase that would result in a teacher making $91,000 earning $121,000 at the end of a four-year contract. However, the union has rejected this proposal, calling on the city to find more money in the budget for teachers. The disagreement over the pay increase is reportedly less than $4 million over the contract’s life.
