The Giannis Antetokounmpo Game Ball Controversy, Explained

Giannis Antetokounmpo set a career and franchise record of 64 points in a game against the Indiana Pacers. Post-game drama ensued over the whereabouts of the game ball from Giannis’ exceptional performance. The Pacers claimed to have taken the ball for rookie Oscar Tshiebwe, who scored his first official point during the game. However, it was later revealed that the Pacers had mistakenly taken a reserve ball. The actual game ball was taken by a Bucks security guard, although Giannis expressed doubt that it was the actual game ball as it seemed “new” and didn’t feel right. The controversy led to exchanges between Giannis and Pacers assistant coach Lloyd Pierce as well as player Tyrese Haliburton.
