Shohei Ohtani”s Deferred Money Puts Bobby Bonilla To Shame
Every year on July 1st, the Mets pay retired baseball player Bobby Bonilla approximately $1.2 million as part of a deferred payment deal on his $5.9 million contract from 1999. The deal will see Bonilla receiving a total of $29.8 million through 2035. However, a new player is set to surpass Bonilla’s deal. Japanese star Shohei Ohtani has signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers, which includes a large amount of deferred money. Ohtani will only receive $2 million per year while playing for the Dodgers, with the remaining $68 million being paid annually from 2034-2043. By deferring such a significant amount, Ohtani’s impact on the Dodgers “competitive balance tax” will only be $46 million, saving the team $24 million per year to spend on other players.
