Simsbury Prohibits Public Cannabis Smoking

  • The town of Simsbury had originally planned to ban the public smoking of all tobacco and vaping products, but after a meeting on Monday, the board of selectmen decided to ban only the public smoking of cannabis.
  • The Simsbury Farms Golf Course was the only public place exempted from the original ban, and it remains exempt after the revision, with the justification that any smoking on the course isn’t affecting anyone due to its remote location and distance from residential areas.
  • Anyone found in violation of the new ordinance, which prohibits smoking cannabis in public areas, will be fined $100.

Simsbury Revises Smoking Ban Plan: Cannabis Prohibited in Public Areas

SIMSBURY, Conn. – Simsbury’s proposed smoking ban in public spaces has been modified. The original intent was to ban both tobacco and vaping products, but after a recent meeting, the town’s board of selectmen has opted to only ban cannabis smoking in public areas.

The initial draft exempted Simsbury Farms Golf Course, the only public spot from the prohibition. The exemption was retained after the parks and recreation department highlighted the course’s financial contribution and secluded location, stating, “The closest residence is approximately 50-100 yards away through dense woods, so smoking on the course doesn’t harm anyone.”

Discussion ensued before the board arrived at a final decision. Adjustments were made to the initial plan, leading to a unanimous agreement to ban cannabis smoking in all public spaces, including the golf course. “The key reason for our meeting is cannabis; otherwise, we wouldn’t be discussing this issue.”

Once enacted, violators of this ordinance will be subject to a $100 fine.
