October Sees Retail Cannabis Sales Peak, Medical Sales Drop

  • Recreational cannabis sales in Connecticut reached a new monthly high in October 2021, with sales totaling $14.7 million according to the state Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). Conversely, medical marijuana sales hit a new monthly low since January, with October’s total reaching $10.1 million.
  • DCP data shows the average price for cannabis products is consistently dropping in both markets. In October, adult-use consumers purchased 393,642 products at an average price of $37.61, while medical patients bought 277,552 products at an average cost of $36.43.
  • The DCP announced in November that retail cannabis business transaction limits will be increased to a half-ounce of raw flower, or the equivalent, per dispensary visit starting from Dec. 1. This is double the previous limit of a quarter-ounce, a change made based on an ongoing analysis of supply and demand.

Connecticut Recreational Cannabis Sales Scale Up as Medical Market Slumps

Recreational cannabis sales in Connecticut are on the rise, hitting a new monthly peak of $14.7 million in October, as per the state’s Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). However, during the same period, the state’s medical market experienced its lowest full-month drop, with sales totaling $10.1 million.

Adult-use cannabis sales in October exceeded September’s figures by over $350,000, whereas medical marijuana sales dipped by almost $700,000. Since the beginning of the year, the state has seen more than $112 million in recreational cannabis sales.

According to DCP, the average cost of cannabis products continues to fall in both the recreational and medical markets. In October, adult-use consumers bought 393,642 products at an average price of $37.61. Conversely, medical patients acquired 277,552 products with an average cost of $36.43.

Earlier in November, DCP officials shared plans to double the cannabis business transaction limits to a half-ounce of raw flower per dispensary visit, starting Dec. 1. This decision, based on DCP’s analysis of supply and demand, doubles the current limit of a quarter-ounce per visit.

The state’s adult-use cannabis program was inaugurated on Jan. 10.
