Nigerian Navy Seizes N254 Million Worth Cannabis, Diesel

The Nigerian Navy intercepted 127 bags of cannabis sativa, valued at N254 million, and numerous containers of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, on Eleko Beach, Lekki and around Liverpool, Apapa, Lagos State. The seizure took place on a fibre boat on Friday.

According to the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga, the interceptions came as a result of intelligence sourced from the Falcon Eye Alignment, a state-of-the-art maritime domain awareness facility.

The patrol team initially confiscated 113 bags of cannabis sativa at the beach. Further examination along the Badagry route led to the discovery of an additional 14 bags. The criminals, upon spotting the team, deserted the narcotics and the boat and escaped. The team secured the abandoned boat and illicit drugs, Oguntuga said.

The Commodore also disclosed the discovery of petroleum products believed to be AGO in numerous drums and jerry cans onboard the boat. “The illicit cargoes were secured by the team after the criminals fled the scene,” said Oguntuga.

Following the operation, the team transported the confiscated petroleum products and a pumping machine back to their base for further investigation. Oguntuga added that all illicit cargoes will be handed over to the proper authority for further probing.

Emphasizing the role of the Nigerian Navy in combating illicit drug trafficking, he said, “These successful arrests highlight the dedication of the Nigerian Navy under the leadership of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to preserve the nation’s resources and the well-being of its people.”
