First Cannabis Dispensary Launches in Hoboken, New Jersey

New Jersey Welcomes Another Cannabis Dispensary: Hoboken’s First
Medical and recreational cannabis use is now legal in New Jersey. Despite a slow start, the cannabis industry welcomes a new dispensary in Hoboken, marking its first cannabis store in the state. Opened in October 2023, “The Station” is just two blocks from the Hoboken train station at River and Newark streets.
Owned by entrepreneur Joseph Castelo, The Station hopes to expand into recreational cannabis sales following approval from the Hoboken Cannabis Review Board. The opening of this medical cannabis dispensary is the result of nearly five years of effort to secure local and state approvals.
Unique Decor Reflects Cannabis Journey
The Station’s decor, inspired by the nearby 1907 Erie Lackawana Train Station, features antique doors, wood fixtures, and stained glass. This unique setting symbolizes the “cannabis journey,” says Castelo. During a tour on November 20, 2023, he asked, “What’s your destination? It could be that you’re seeking sleep or calm. Or creativity.”
Prior to entering the cannabis industry, Castelo was a filmmaker. He now hopes that The Station and his other businesses will mutually benefit each other. The Station has already attracted customers from Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken, and New York City.
According to a November 2023 press release, Castelo seeks to “educate patients and consumers, destigmatize cannabis, and celebrate the role intentional cannabis consumption can play in nourishing our bodies, minds, and relationships.”
