Entrepreneur Joe Salome Shakes Up Cannabis Industry

  • In 1972, the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse recommended the decriminalization of personal marijuana use. Yet, it was not until 2013 that Colorado became the first U.S. state to legalize recreational cannabis, which posed unique challenges including state decisions on criminal activity standards and recreational use allowances.
  • Joe Salome, Co-founder and Managing Partner of The Georgia Hemp Company, started his path in the cannabis business while attending Kennesaw State University’s entrepreneurship program. The legalization of recreational cannabis in Colorado highlighted an industry he had been focusing on for years. Salome created The Georgia Hemp Company primarily to help people, including his mother who was undergoing chemotherapy.
  • In Georgia, cannabis usage is governed by the Haleigh’s Hope Act law which allows registered patients and caregivers to legally possess up to 20 fluid ounces of low-THC oil based on doctor recommendations. This law covers 18 qualifying conditions. The greatest challenge for The Georgia Hemp Company is the current lack of regulations in the industry. Despite this, they strive to verify the quality of their products and provide a positive, educational experience for their customers.

In 1972, the bipartisan National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse, or the Shafer Commission, proposed decriminalization of personal marijuana use. Despite this, U.S. cannabis legalization only began in 2013 with Colorado.
