Psychologist Deborah Serani, a senior professor at New York’s Adelphi University, explained in an interview with NBC’s “Today” show that these decorations induce a neurological shift that can produce happiness. “Anything that diverts us from our daily routines stimulates our senses, which measure whether it’s pleasing or not,” she said.

According to Serani, holiday decorations can trigger a dopamine spike, a hormone associated with feelings of happiness. “For many of us, Christmas is a magical time, evoking innocence and joy,” she added.
