Boosting Mood With Positive Phrases

(NEXSTAR) — Positive phrases can be a powerful tool in lifting spirits, but it’s important to note that not all uplifting sayings resonate in the same way. In fact, some can even be considered irritating.

Preply, a platform offering online language tutoring, conducted a survey involving 995 Americans. The survey, carried out during the summer, sought opinions on various popular positive phrases, many of which are influenced by music and cultural events.

The survey results indicated that 25% of people use uplifting phrases in their daily conversations, and a significant 79% believe that uttering such phrases can enhance their moods.

Using Positive Phrases in Challenging Times

Furthermore, 1 out of 6 respondents reported they were “extremely likely” to employ optimistic language to motivate themselves or others during difficult times.

The phrase “the best is yet to come” was seen as the most hopeful by survey participants.

From the realm of new music, the Kelly Clarkson lyric “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” was ranked as the most uplifting phrase. This was followed closely by “Hakuna Matata” from the Lion King soundtrack.

Top 10 Annoying Positive Phrases

However, not all positive phrases were appreciated by the participants. “Live, laugh, love,” a common phrase found on graphic T-shirts and wall art, was deemed annoying by about 41% of the respondents. They expressed a desire to see it banished.

Here is a list of 10 other positive phrases that Americans would like to “cancel,” as per the survey:

  1. Live, laugh, love
  2. It is what it is
  3. Happiness is a choice
  4. Good vibes only
  5. Carpe diem

Preply also compiled a top five list of the most irritating slang phrases, based on the participants’ feedback. “This Barbie is _____,” a flexible tagline popularized by the “Barbie” movie craze, was included. The other phrases are:

  1. YOLO (you only live once)
  2. That slaps
  3. This Barbie is _____
  4. Sheeeeesh

“That slaps” is a slang term indicating that something is incredibly good. “Sheeeeesh” is an expression of surprise, excitement, or even disappointment. The term “beverage goblin” is used to describe someone who constantly needs three drinks: one for hydration, one for energy (usually caffeinated), and one for leisure.

The survey participants ranged from 18 to 76 years of age. Approximately half (49%) were women, 49% were men, and 2% identified as nonbinary.
