Top Retirement Destinations: Pennsylvania Takes the Lead

Contrary to popular belief, Florida no longer holds the title of the ultimate retirement paradise in the United States. As per the latest U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 rankings, the top five retirement destinations in the nation are now cities in Pennsylvania.

The new ranking system took into account a variety of factors such as cost of living, which included elements like property insurance and risk of severe weather events, which has resulted in a shift from the traditional Florida hotspots.

Why Retirement in Pennsylvania is a Great Idea: The Harrisburg Example

According to the U.S. News & World Report’s latest survey, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has emerged as the top retirement choice among the 150 most populous metropolitan areas. This result is attributed to the city’s excellent healthcare services for seniors, favorable retiree tax rates, and a high happiness quotient among its residents.

Pennsylvania showcased a strong performance in the rankings with seven of its cities making it into the top 10 retirement spots. Florida managed to secure just one position in the top 10 with Daytona Beach taking the eighth spot.

The Changing Trends in Retirement Choices

Despite the new Pennsylvania-friendly rankings, Florida continues to attract a high influx of seniors aged 65 to 74 in the past decade, as suggested by data from Oxford Economics.

However, the trend of seniors migrating to Sun Belt states has witnessed a slowdown since 2018. One possible explanation for this pattern could be the increasing trend of aging in place, influenced by factors such as increased longevity, lack of sufficient retirement savings, and a decline in retiree pensions. As a result, many seniors are now deciding to continue working post the age of 65, with over a third of 65 to 69-year-olds and nearly 20% of seniors in their 70s still part of the labor force.

The U.S. News & World Report bases its rankings on an overall retirement score derived from six indexes. These indexes are weighted based on the results of online surveys conducted among people aged 45 and older. However, it’s worth mentioning that the rankings and their methodology have been the subject of criticism in the past.
