Operating since 1993, this haunt has become a staple of Halloween in Pennsylvania, instilling fear and excitement in residents year after year. The Beginnings of Field of Screams

Field of Screams originated from the creative minds of two brothers, one being Jim Schopf. Schopf, who was studying secondary education at Millersville University, co-founded the haunt. Despite his academic pursuits, the haunted attraction flourished, essentially becoming a full-time occupation.

In discussing the success and impact of Field of Screams, Schopf expressed a range of emotions. “Thrilling, rewarding, exhilarating and a lot of fun,” he said, adding that his favorite moment every year is “opening night. It’s seeing all the hard work during the off-season come to fruition and finally being open.”

The Team Behind the Scares

But it’s not just the Schopf brothers behind the scare. Field of Screams owes its success to countless volunteers and actors who bring the haunt to life. There are dozens of characters and scare performers across the four haunted attractions that constitute Field of Screams. These include the Nocturnal Wasteland, Den of Darkness, Frightmare Asylum, and the infamous Haunted Hayride.

Nestled within the corn fields lies the main hub for the Field of Screams team. A two-story barn is home to every costume, prop, and special effect that brings the horror to life each evening.

Meet the Actors

Mason Swisher, a chainsaw performer, has become a staple at Field of Screams. He’s been with the team for eight years, and he cites the camaraderie and release of pent-up aggression as reasons for his return each year.

As Field of Screams wraps up its 31st season on Nov. 11, fans can rest assured that the scares won’t end. The team is already preparing for a comeback in September 2024.
