North Carolina Women’s Basketball Game Highlights




As the heart of North Carolina’s basketball scene, Chapel Hill is buzzing with excitement as the UNC women’s basketball team prepares to host another in-state rival, the Davidson Wildcats, at the Carmichael Arena this Sunday. The Wildcats are coming into this game fresh off their victory against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. The game is set to start at 6 p.m.

 

The Tar Heels, currently ranked 16th, began the season strong with a resounding 102-49 win against Gardner-Webb. The Wildcats are also off to a good start with a 57-52 home victory against Wake Forest.

 

Heels vs. Wildcats: A Closer Look

This will be the fifth encounter between the UNC Tar Heels and Davidson Wildcats, and the first in over a decade. The last game between the two teams was held in Chapel Hill on Nov. 9, 2012, as part of the Preseason WNIT, with the Tar Heels emerging victorious with a score of 70-59. The majority of their previous meetings have taken place in Chapel Hill. The very first match-up was held in Davidson on Feb. 15, 1975, during UNC’s inaugural season as a varsity sport under the Department of Athletics. This game contributed to a 14-game winning streak that kicked off the season.

 

Scouting the Wildcats

Davidson is currently navigating a series of games against Atlantic Coast Conference teams. After hosting and defeating Wake Forest, they’re now preparing for their match at Chapel Hill, followed by a game at Duke. The Wildcats began their season with a decisive 86-51 win against USC Upstate, with top scorer Charlise Dunn leading the team with 17 points.

 

UNC’s Recent Performance

The UNC women’s basketball team kicked off the season with an overwhelming 102-49 victory over Gardner-Webb. Six Tar Heels scored in double figures, with Alyssa Ustby and Indya Nivar recording double-doubles. Nivar also made highlights by sinking a three-pointer from beyond half court to end the first quarter, a shot that featured fifth on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10. This win marks the Tar Heels’ sixth consecutive 1-0 start and a 34-4 record in regular season non-conference games under coach Courtney Banghart.

 

An Impressive Start for the Tar Heels

Wednesday’s game was a milestone for the Tar Heels under coach Courtney Banghart, marking the second time the team has scored 100 or more points. The team’s 57-point second half and 40-point third quarter are some of the highest scores recorded under Banghart’s tenure. Furthermore, Indya Nivar showcased her skills by recording her first double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, making her the first Tar Heel to achieve a double-double in her first career game at Carolina since Stephanie Mavunga in 2013.
