As reported by WBTV and QC LIFE, North Carolina has secured the 6th position in the WalletHub 2024 study of ‘Best & Worst States to Drive in’.

Methodology of the Study

Released on January 15, the study aimed to identify the most driver-friendly states across the nation. The ranking was determined using 31 essential parameters such as average gas prices, rush-hour traffic congestion, and road quality.

North Carolina’s Performance in Key Metrics

• Ranked 23rd for Share of Rush-Hour Traffic Congestion
• Ranked 18th for Car Theft Rate
• Ranked 7th for Auto-Repair Shops per Capita
• Ranked 19th for Average Gas Prices
• Ranked 5th for Auto-Maintenance Costs
• Ranked 18th for Road Quality
• Ranked 10th for Car Dealerships per Capita

The Overall Score

In terms of cost of ownership and maintenance, North Carolina ranked 6th, while it was placed 32nd for traffic and infrastructure. It received a safety rank of 24th and was 10th in vehicle access and maintenance. With these scores, the state achieved an overall score of 62.34, taking a spot between Alabama (5th) and Ohio (7th).

Comparison with South Carolina

Neighboring South Carolina, on the other hand, found itself at the 30th position with a total score of 56.11. It ranked 9th in cost of ownership and maintenance, 27th in traffic and infrastructure, and 46th in safety rank. Its rank for vehicle access and maintenance was 26th.
