New Teams in North Carolina High School Basketball Rankings

The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer of Raleigh have added eight new teams to their statewide high school basketball rankings, including a new number one team.

Highlights of the Rankings

In the 4A girls’ category, Independence (7-0) ascended to the top position. The team was due to play Charlotte Catholic, the second-ranked team, at their home ground. Independence is also leading The Charlotte Observer’s regional Sweet 16 poll, a tradition going into its 40th year.

Meanwhile, previous 4A leader Panther Creek High School dropped to the fourth spot after their first loss.

In the 2A rankings, North Stanly (9-0) and Community School of Davidson (4-0) were the new entrants, ranking 5th and 10th respectively. The 1A category welcomed East Columbus at the 8th position.

On the boys’ side, five new teams joined the rankings while the top teams remained unchanged.

In the NCISAA poll, eight-game winner Forsyth Country Day became part of the rankings. In the 3A category, 5-0 Gastonia Ashbrook was ranked 10th. Salisbury (5-2) and Lincolnton (5-0) were new to the 2A poll at 6th and 8th positions respectively. The 1A poll saw the inclusion of 7-0 Northside in the 10th position.
