According to WBTV/QC LIFE, North Carolina came in at number 6 in the 2024 WalletHub’s Best & Worst States to Drive in study.

The study, released on January 15, evaluated each state based on 31 crucial factors. These metrics included average gas prices, rush-hour traffic congestion, and road quality to identify the most driver-friendly states.

  • 23rd – Share of Rush-Hour Traffic Congestion
  • 18th – Car Theft Rate
  • 7th – Auto-Repair Shops per Capita
  • 19th – Average Gas Prices
  • 5th – Auto-Maintenance Costs
  • 18th – Road Quality
  • 10th – Car Dealerships per Capita

Factors Contributing to North Carolina‘s Ranking

North Carolina achieved a 6th place ranking because of its cost of ownership and maintenance (6th), traffic and infrastructure (32nd), safety rank (24th), and vehicle access and maintenance (10th). This resulted in an overall score of 62.34, placing North Carolina between Alabama (5th) and Ohio (7th).

South Carolina’s Standing in the Study

The study also ranked South Carolina at number 30, with a total score of 56.11. The state scored 9th for cost of ownership and maintenance, 27th for traffic and infrastructure, 46th for safety rank, and 26th for vehicle access and maintenance.
