Tim Moore Confirms 2024 Congressional Run in North Carolina

North Carolina House Speaker Set to Run for U.S. House

House Speaker Tim Moore of North Carolina has officially declared his candidacy for the U.S. House. Moore is set to run in the recently redrawn south-central district, a move orchestrated by the Republican-majority General Assembly.

Moore’s Political Journey and Aspirations

With his formal entry into the 2024 race for the reconfigured 14th Congressional District, Moore refers to his legislative achievements in Raleigh along with North Carolina’s robust economy as proof of his potential effectiveness in Washington, D.C.

“I’m eager to bring the same conservative leadership that I’ve displayed in the state House for the past nine years to Washington, D.C,” Moore says in a promotional video for his campaign.

Moore’s Future Political Plans

Moore’s political advisor confirmed last week that Moore, a member of the Cleveland County Republican party, has begun discussing his candidacy with members of the state’s congressional delegation and prominent supporters.

Moore has made it clear that he will not seek re-election for his state House seat or the House speaker position, indicating his intent to pursue a congressional bid.

Redrawn District Maps and Political Shifts

The legislature has implemented a map for all 14 districts, establishing the new 14th District which leans Republican and encompasses six counties. This includes parts of Charlotte stretching west to the foothills, and Moore’s home city, Kings Mountain.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jeff Jackson, currently representing the 14th District, has been allocated a different district under the new map and plans to run for state attorney general in the upcoming year.

Moore’s Political Achievements and Goals

Since becoming the state House Rules Committee chairman in 2011 when the Republicans assumed control of the chamber, Moore has been elected speaker for a record five two-year terms. He has actively participated in cutting personal income taxes, instituting photo ID requirements for voting, and imposing further restrictions on abortion following the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade.

The Race for the 14th District

Candidate registrations will begin next month for the March 5 primary. Republican Pat Harrigan, who was unsuccessful against Jackson in the 2022 general election, will be running in the reconfigured 14th District.

Harrigan, a former Green Beret with service in Afghanistan, has amassed nearly $750,000 for his campaign as of October. He has already started targeting Moore with allegations of corruption.
