Rowan Radio: Voted #1 US College Station for 2nd Year!

For the second year running, Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM, has been crowned College Radio Station of the Year during the annual Pinnacle Awards by College Media Association on Nov. 1 in Atlanta, GA.

Historic Achievement for Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM

This triumphant moment marks the third occasion in the station’s 59-year history since its establishment, with previous wins in 1997 and 2022. The Pinnacle Awards had previously recognized WGLS-FM as the nation’s top college radio station last year.

Station Manager Derek Jones attributes this repetitive win to a devoted cohort of students with a strong desire for success. He said, “This consecutive victory is a remarkable testament to our staff’s teamwork and desire to create award-winning content.” Jones emphasized the vital role students play, referring to them as the heartbeat of Rowan Radio.

Rowan Radio’s Competition

Rowan Radio faced stiff competition from colleges with an undergraduate enrollment of over 10,000 students. Among the finalists were North Carolina State University, Oregon State University, and Michigan State University.

Previously, Rowan Radio had been a finalist in the College Radio Station of the Year category at the Pinnacle Awards in both 2013 and 2017.

The Pinnacle Awards, presented by the College Media Association, highlights excellence in college media during the organization’s annual convention, with competitors ranging from colleges and universities nationwide.

Focused on Quality Content

The College Radio Station of the Year competition pays attention to a station’s news and entertainment content from the previous 12 months. Last year, several WGLS programs gained national recognition, including the Rowan Report (the station’s weekly news program) and Mother’s Needs (a podcast addressing the struggles of single mothers). These programs received multiple awards from the College Media Association, Broadcast Education Association, and the Communicator Awards.

Since 1993, Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM has been honored with over 360 regional and national awards, affirming its status as a leading college radio station.

We extend our congratulations to the entire Rowan Radio staff on this amazing achievement!
