Result: Tie!

The women’s swim team from South Carolina nearly upset #13 North Carolina, ending the meet in a 150-150 tie, while the men’s team from North Carolina defeated South Carolina 161-139 on the road.

For the South Carolina women, this is the closest they have come to defeating UNC since their victory in 1985, with UNC having 12 consecutive wins before this meet.

Highlights from the Women’s Meet

The women’s contest showcased remarkable performances from both teams. As the underdog, South Carolina made the most noise about the result.

Before the final race, South Carolina held a 9 point margin. This meant that UNC needed a 1-2 finish to win or a 1-3 finish to tie, with the Tarheels’ sprint depth making a 3rd-place finish probable.

The relay team consisting of Greer Pattison (49.29), Delaney Carlton (48.91), Olivia Nel (48.32), and Elizabeth Sowards (49.31) clocked a finish time of 3:15.83.

Nel’s split, notably, was a tenth faster than her performance in the previous year’s 400 free relay at the NCAA Championships where the Tar Heels placed 13th. The Tar Heels sprint group remains a strength of the program over the decade, even after the graduation of Grace Countie and Sophie Lindner.

Thanks to a sweep by two-time NCAA Champion Aranza Vazquez, North Carolina entered the swimming section of the meet with a 20-point lead.
