Pennsylvania’s Preferred Mullet Contest: An Event to Remember

Pennsylvania’s Preferred Mullet Contest: A Spectacular Display of Unique Hairstyles

Picture a bustling crowd in the Main Hall Stage area of the Farm Show. Over a hundred contestants and an even greater number of eager spectators, all gathered for the thrilling Pennsylvania’s Preferred Mullet Contest. This inaugural event, held on the morning of January 8, drew over 60 participants in the Under 18 category, plus more than two dozen in both the Over 18 and Throw Back category – the latter being photos submitted electronically from any time in the past.

Above and Beyond Expectations

Madison Shaw, the main hall assistant manager at the Farm Show, was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming turnout. Reflecting on the event, she shared, “It went much better than I expected.” The enthusiastic atmosphere was amplified as contestants took turns on stage, showing off their unique hairstyles with pride and vigor, flipping their hair, flexing their muscles, and throwing up the rock-and-roll horns.

The Diversity of Mullet Styles

The mullets on display varied greatly. Some contestants sported long, straight hair, while others embraced curls. Some had intricate designs shaved into their sides or styled the “business” side of their mullet in the front or on top. Thin mustaches and Pit Viper style sunglasses were popular accessories amongst the older participants. A particularly memorable moment came when a young contestant ripped open his shirt like Hulk Hogan, revealing his luxurious, flowing mullet locks which he claimed had grown in just a year. He enthusiastically exclaimed, “My hair grows really fast!”

Judging the Mullets

The responsibility of judging the contest fell on Brittany Goldberg, a stylist from the Heavy Metal Hair Salon in Philadelphia, and her husband Jason Goldberg. Both were astonished by the diversity and creativity of the mullets. Brittany noted that the overall presentation, including styling and accessories, played a critical role in determining the winners.

Winning the Contest: Showmanship and Dedication

Pete Brubaker of Elizabethtown won first place in the Over 18 competition and was named the Best In Grow. Brubaker’s spirited stage presence and decades-long commitment to his mullet won over the judges. With a proud “USA” chant and a declaration of “God bless America and God bless the Farm Show,” Brubaker put on a show that couldn’t be beaten. As Brubaker exclaimed, he has sported his mullet, uncut, since 1985.
