Bowie State University Athletics: Bulldogs Triumph Over Shepherd, 65-61

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Bowie State women’s basketball team triumphed over the Shepherd Rams thanks to a  stellar 20-point performance from the bench, leading them to a 65-61 victory Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (3-2) boasted three players who scored in double figures. This was led by Anii Harris, who scored an impressive 16 points. Mia Smith added 11 points, eight rebounds, and two steals, while Jayla Irvin also contributed 10 points and four steals from the bench.

Their rebounding prowess was on display as Bowie State defeated Shepherd 52-31 in Tuesday’s game, with standout player Katerra Myers leading with eight boards. The Bulldogs also secured 21 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points.

The Bulldog’s defense shined bright in the contest, causing 20 Ram turnovers which resulted in an additional 16 points. Irvin’s four steals were a highlight for the Bulldogs.

The Game Unfolded

BSU found themselves trailing at the close of the first quarter, 18-12. Shepherd continued to build on their lead, pushing their advantage to 30-21 before Bowie State rallied with a 10-0 run, taking a 31-30 lead courtesy of a key score from Myers. The Rams quickly responded, however, reclaiming a 37-34 lead as they entered halftime.

Shepherd continued to extend their lead after halftime, but BSU fought back with a 9-0 run to take a 43-40 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs held onto their advantage, entering the fourth quarter with a six-point lead. This was largely due to exploiting 11 Shepherd turnovers, which they converted into six points.

Despite a minor comeback from the Rams with an 11-9 scoring frame in the final quarter, Bowie State managed to secure the victory.

After the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Bulldogs are set to return to action on Monday, Nov. 25 for their home opener against California (PA) inside A.C. Jordan Arena. The game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. The Vulcans have a three-game winning streak against the BSU since 2011, including last year’s 78-62 defeat on the road.
