Melissa Barrera Leaves ‘Scream’ Franchise Due to Controversial Social Media Posts

Melissa Barrera has been dismissed from the ‘Scream’ franchise due to controversial social media posts which the production company describes as hate-inciting and antisemitic.

Barrera, who previously starred in “Scream” and “Scream VI”, was reportedly let go because of her posts regarding Israel and Palestine, disrupting her scheduled lead role in “Scream VII”.

Among her controversial statements was an Instagram story seemingly suggesting that Jewish people control Western media. Barrera wrote, “I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side…because Western media only shows the other side.”

In other posts, Barrera likened Gaza to a concentration camp and referred to the conflict in the Middle East as “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing”. She also described Israel as a “colonized” land.

Variety was first to break the news of Barrera’s firing. Following the announcement, the actress posted a cryptic message on social media, possibly referencing the incident. “I’d rather be excluded for who I include than included for who I exclude,” she wrote.

Christopher Landon, who is set to direct ‘Scream VII,’ responded to the news on social media, saying, “This was not my decision to make. Everything sucks. Stop yelling.”

The decision to fire Barrera came from Spyglass Media Group, the production company for the ‘Scream’ franchise. They stated, “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form… including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

Barrera, known for her role as Sam Carpenter in “Scream” and “Scream VI,” now leaves “Scream VII” with significant changes to be made following her departure.

Other actresses are also facing backlash for their comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict. As previously reported, Susan Sarandon was dropped by her Hollywood talent agency after a controversial speech at a pro-Palestine rally in NYC.
