Kumail Nanjiani, the lead actor in Marvel’s 2021 movie “Eternals,” has opened up about the harsh criticism the film received, admitting it led him to seek therapy.

The actor revealed on the “Inside of You” podcast with Michael Rosenbaum that he felt the effort he’d put into the movie wasn’t reflected in the critical response, which greatly disturbed him.

He found the reviews disheartening and admitted to obsessively reading each think piece about the movie, which negatively influenced his mental health and personal life.

Nanjiani confessed, “It was really hard, and that was when I thought it was unfair to me and unfair to [my wife] Emily, and I can’t approach my work this way anymore. Some change was needed, so I started counseling.”

Nanjiani believes he’s still dealing with the aftereffects of the experience. He recalled a recent dinner with a co-star, where they both agreed that the response to the movie had indeed been tough.

Despite this, Nanjiani remains convinced that the film is good, attributing the overwhelmingly negative response more to the cultural climate at the time than to the film’s quality.
