NFL Legend Antonio Gates Misses Hall of Fame Inclusion

Antonio Gates, NFL legend, didn’t make the cut for this year’s Hall of Fame, delaying the gold jacket honor for at least another 12 months.

It’s surprising as Gates, with his stellar career, was deemed a strong first-ballot contender. The 43-year-old ex-tight end amassed 11,841 receiving yards on 955 catches and 116 touchdowns. According to Pro Football Reference’s Hall of Fame Monitor, only three tight ends – Tony Gonzalez, Rob Gronkowski, and Travis Kelce – were more deserving of a bust.

In November, Gates expressed his belief that he and Julius Peppers were set to receive the prestigious call. However, as of Thursday, he hasn’t been selected.

Other Finalists for Hall of Fame

Other finalists in the running for the Hall of Fame included Dwight Freeney, Devin Hester, Andre Johnson, Torry Holt, and Patrick Willis. The full 2024 class will be announced at the NFL Honors ceremony in Las Vegas later Thursday evening.
