Boost Health & Happiness Post-Retirement: Study Reveals

Benefits of Retirement: Enhancing Health and Happiness

Retirement may not be a stage of life eagerly anticipated by all, but a recent study suggests it has the potential to improve both happiness and health. The study, which was carried out across ten European countries, involved more than 20,000 participants aged between 50 and 80.

Increased Fitness in Retirement

Researchers have discovered that retirement can bring about significant fitness benefits, especially for former office workers. As you move away from your sedentary work life, you may find yourself engaging in more physical activities such as walking or joining an exercise group.

The study reveals a transformational effect of retirement on everyday living. Those who retired were more likely to report being in good or excellent health compared to their working counterparts.

In fact, even when the age factor was considered, the retired group was found to be less likely to have physical difficulties with daily tasks such as housework and gardening than those still in employment.

Improved Mental Health Post-Retirement

The research, published in the journal Economics and Human Biology, also found that white-collar workers, such as managers and office staff, and women experienced a notable boost in mental health after retirement.

The researchers suggest that women might feel happier than men in retirement as they usually spend more of their free time socializing with family and friends.

However, the study found that early retirement did not provide significant health benefits.

Professor Reyn van Ewijk, the lead researcher from Johanes Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germany, suggested that those with stressful jobs may experience significant relief after retirement, leading them to feel healthier and more satisfied.
